Winchester, VA - Just a week after claiming their second USA South Indoor team titles in as many seasons, the Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams remained indoors for the South Region Qualifier at Shenandoah. The meet, contested over two days, served as one last opportunity to post nationally competitive, and personal best times during the indoor season.
While only a fraction of the team participated, with many opting to focus on the upcoming outdoor season, the Knights still managed several notable performances, including two program records. Riding the momentum of his victory in the pole vault at the USA South Championships, Tucker McCormick improved his mark further with a vault of 4.46 meters (14' 7.5"). It earned him a second place finish and the fifth spot on the program's all-time list.
In the women's 800 meters, Heidi Barton executed her race to near perfection. She led from the gun, increasing her lead slightly over the first three laps before using a blistering final 200 to separate herself from the competition. Barton's time of 2:18.06 (2:16.49) eclipsed the previous program record by over a second.

The second record of the day belonged to the men's distance medley quartet of Joseph Hughes, Ryan Pascual, Kedryn Chandler, and Dylan May. The group used grit and determination in a race against the clock, ultimately crossing the line in an impressive time of 10:25.52 (10:17.14), seven seconds better than the long-standing record. Hughes' opening leg in the 1200 set the tone before the All-American Dylan May brought them across the finish line. The performance ranks an impressive third in the South Region.
After a successful indoor season, the Knights have their sights set on the outdoor portion of their schedule. They'll have two weekends without competition before the W&L Carnival, hosted by Washington and Lee, on March 21-22.
