Penn Laird, VA - In the final weekend of indoor competition before the postseason, the Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams spent their Friday at the Rockingham Collegiate Classic, hosted by Bridgewater College. While only half of the team participated, there were still notable performances from the Knights as they continue their preparations for the USA South Indoor Championship meet next weekend.
During the morning session, the Knights' high-flyers in the high jump got them off to an excellent start in the field events. Mikki Prows delivered another steady performance in the women's event, clearing 1.57 meters (5' 1.75") for the third straight meet. On the men's side, Jayton Hall, who was competing for the first time this season, blew past his personal best with a clearance of 2.01 meters (6' 7"). Hall's jump is the top mark in the conference this season and places him in the top 25 nationally.
The women's distance medley team of Jasmine De Souza, Isabelle Walley, Elizabeth Dalebout, and Emmalee Gabrylczyk won the second event of the day for the Knights, crossing the line in 13:59.86 and giving them a qualifying time ahead of the conference meet. Bayleigh Redd and Heidi Barton gave the Knights more high finishes in the distance events. Redd finished second in the mile, while Barton put together her best performance in the 800m this season, finishing with a time of 2:22.39. Both of them sit second in the conference in their respective events.
Surraiya Mahmud and Mikki Prows gave the field events two more top-five finishes with their performances in the women's shot put. The two also sit second and third on the conference performance list for the event, and will be key cogs in the team's success in multiple field events at the conference championship meet.
With the regular season officially behind them, the Knights will shift their focus to the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home of the USA South Indoor Track and Field Championships. While it is only the second year that the sport is sponsored by the conference, both the men and women have an opportunity to clinch their fourth consecutive indoor team championship, which includes their two seasons of championships as part of the Dlll Atlantic Indoor conference.
