Women's Tennis Splits Conference Matches

By Paul Monson

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— The Southern Virginia University Women's Tennis team took the road this weekend to play their first Capital Athletic Conference matches of the season. The Knights earned a well fought 8-1 win over Frostburg State on Friday before falling to a tough Christopher Newport team 9-0 on Saturday.

On Friday, the Knights (9-2, 1-1 CAC) came out firing at the #1 and #2 doubles spots taking out their opponents from Frostburg State (3-6, 0-3 CAC) 8-5 and 8-1. The #3 team consisting of Makaela Adamson and Mercedes Matley went back and forth the whole match before ultimately taking out their opponents 9-7.

In singles, Southern Virginia cruised to to victory hardly dropping any games at the 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 spots. At #2 singles, Audrey McBride wasn't quite able to overcome the consistency of her opponent as she fell 6-4 6-3.

The next morning, the Knights took the court to take on a much tougher Christopher Newport team. The Captains (8-4, 2-1 CAC) came out relentless, sweeping the Knights, giving away hardly any games in the process. Natalie Teets had the best showing for the Knights as she collected four games in the effort.

Southern Virginia improves to an impressive 9-2 on the season, and looks to continue its success as they hit the road again to face up against Mary Baldwin. The match is scheduled to be held on Monday, March 26 at 4 p.m.
