Knights Suffer First Loss of Season

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — After starting its season 10-0—the best start in program history—the Southern Virginia University women's tennis team suffered its first defeat Tuesday afternoon at Bridgewater College 6-3.

The match was part of a doubleheader with Southern Virginia men's tennis, which suffered a 9-0 loss to the Bridgewater Eagles.

Southern Virginia (10-1) fell behind early to Bridgewater (8-2) after the Eagles took two of three doubles matches.

The duo of Rebekah Reid and Brynn Hansen recorded the only Southern Virginia doubles victory of the day with a back-and-forth 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles.

The Knights then dropped four of six singles matches to reach the final score.

Rachel Read defeated Bridgewater's top-seeded singles player 6-4, 6-1, while Bethany Johnson won a split-set match at No. 3 singles 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Women's tennis will look to bounce back on Friday, Mar. 25 when it travels to Meredith College for a match at 3 p.m.
