Hampton, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team dropped a tight doubleheader to the Shipbuilders of The Apprentice School, falling 3–2 in both games.
Game One
The Knights came out strong in the opener. Mason Jones drew a walk and stole second before coming around to score on an RBI single from Bobby Rossi, giving Southern Virginia an early 1–0 lead.
Apprentice answered with a two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs to take the lead. The game remained a pitcher's duel until the sixth inning, when Jones launched a leadoff solo home run to tie the game at 2–2.
Strong pitching kept the contest even into the ninth, but the Shipbuilders delivered a walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning to secure the 3–2 victory.
Freshman Tad Peterson turned in a solid start, throwing four innings and allowing just two hits and two runs. Carson Bybee followed with four strong innings of relief, surrendering only one hit — a decisive blow late in the game.
Game Two
In the second game, Apprentice again struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second to take a 3–0 lead.
Southern Virginia responded in the third as Robert Stempin doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Tyler Bales to get the Knights on the board. The Knights added another run in the fourth after consecutive singles from Marcelino Leonardo Jr., Jones, and Rossi cut the deficit to 3–2.
Despite continued pressure, Southern Virginia was unable to push across the tying run, falling by the same 3–2 margin.
The Knights will look to bounce back on Tuesday, February 24, when they travel to face Guilford College at 2:00 p.m. Southern Virginia dropped a 13–10 contest to the Quakers in their last meeting in 2025.
