Late Rally Falls Short as Southern Virginia University Baseball Drops Decision at Guilford

Greensboro, N.C. — Southern Virginia University baseball came up just short in a midweek road matchup, falling 7–6 to Guilford College.

The Quakers struck early, plating three runs in the first inning to seize momentum. The Knights responded in the fourth inning with a surge of their own. Zack Geertsen was hit by a pitch to begin the rally, and Garrett Stauffer followed with a single up the middle to spark the offense. Geertsen later scored on a passed ball, and Mason Jones delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Stauffer.

The inning continued to build as Ben Agnew roped a double down the line before Ryan Farris launched a two-run home run to give Southern Virginia a 4–3 lead.

Guilford answered in the fifth with three runs on three hits to reclaim a 6–4 advantage and extended the lead to 7–4 after seven innings of play.

The Knights threatened late, cutting into the deficit and setting up a dramatic finish. Geertsen delivered a solo home run in the ninth inning to bring Southern Virginia within one, but the comeback attempt ultimately fell short at 7–6.

On the mound, Emerson Robinson, James Horsley, and Javari Christopher each provided scoreless innings in relief to keep the Knights within striking distance.

Offensively, Seth Lloyd, Geertsen, Stauffer, and Agnew all recorded multi-hit performances in the narrow defeat.

Southern Virginia concludes its eight-game road swing with a doubleheader against University of Mary Washington on Saturday, February 28, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
