John Martinez, an esteemed Defensive Line coach at Southern Virginia University, brings a wealth of experience as a coach and former athlete. In addition to his responsibilities with the defense, he also oversees equipment operations for the Knights. Before coming to SVU, Martinez served as the offensive line coach at his alma mater, Cottonwood High School and Hammond Magnet High School in Louisiana. Emerging as a highly touted prospect from Murray (Utah) Cottonwood and a 2009 Under Armour All-American, Martinez's football journey began with a remarkable recruitment to the University of Southern California (USC) by legendary coach Pete Carroll. Following his stint in Seattle, Martinez excelled as a professional athlete, making significant contributions for three years as a fullback in the Arena Football League. His experience as a professional athlete extended beyond the gridiron into Major League Rugby, contributing to the Utah Warrior's inaugural season.

Martinez was adopted at birth and raised by Steve and Lori. Martinez's football journey has been greatly influenced by rich family history of gridiron success he is connected to through his birth parents Mapui Tai and Sinia Kaufusi, including His cousins, Henry (1994-95), Jeff (1994-96), Doug (1998-2001) and Jason (2000-03) Kaufusi all played football at Utah, with Doug (offensive lineman) and Jason (defensive lineman) earning All-Conference honors and Doug later playing in the NFL and CFL, and cousins Steve (1985-87) and Rich (1989-90) played football at BYU.Â
Martinez was baptized and confirmed a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints member on June 25, 2022, in Hurst, Texas. He is engaged to Lina Suliafu and plans to marry in the summer of 2024.
