Colby Hyder brings a rich background of experience and leadership to his new role as the Linebackers Coach for Southern Virginia University. A former standout linebacker for the Knights, Colby’s time as a player was defined by his relentless drive, defensive prowess, and commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

Colby made an immediate impact at SVU, becoming a key defensive leader during his four-year playing career from 2019 to 2023. In his junior season (2022-2023), Colby played in all 10 games and led the Knights’ defense with 71 total tackles, including 39 solo tackles and 32 assisted tackles, ranking sixth in the USA South Conference. He also recorded a game-changing interception against LaGrange. As a sophomore (Fall 2021), he played in 9 games, tallying 5 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, and a pass breakup in a key season-opening win at Wilmington (Ohio). During the shortened Spring 2021 season, Colby continued his standout performance, registering 10 solo tackles, 7 assisted tackles, and 2 sacks in just three games.

Colby’s freshman season (2019) saw him play in all 10 games, contributing on defense and special teams. His highlight performance came in a game against Hampden-Sydney, where he recorded a season-high 3 tackles.

Before joining SVU, Colby was a dominant force at his high school in Utah, earning three varsity letters in football and serving as team captain. His standout play earned him a spot in the Utah High School 3A All-Star game, and he placed third in the state’s 3A wrestling tournament. Colby’s skill and leadership on the field earned him recognition as a 3A All-Star Linebacker.

Now stepping into the role of Linebackers Coach at Southern Virginia University, Colby is excited to help develop the next generation of Knights. With his extensive playing experience and deep connection to the program, he is poised to make an immediate impact on the team and build a strong defensive unit.
