Grottoes, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team captured two of three games in a high-scoring series against the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University, plating an incredible 56 runs over the weekend. Highlighting the series was senior catcher Ryan Farris, who recorded the first cycle in program history.
Across the three games, the two teams combined for a staggering 96 runs in an offensive showcase.
Game One – Southern Virginia 25, Mary Baldwin 12
The Knights delivered one of the most explosive offensive performances in program history in game one, scoring 25 runs on 25 hits—tying for the most hits in a single game and marking the second-most runs ever recorded.
Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 5–1 lead early, but Southern Virginia responded in a big way. Mason Jones ignited the comeback with a home run to right-center, and the Knights took control in the fifth inning. Zack Geertsen led off with a double, Jones followed with a single, and Farris delivered a two-RBI triple to left. A sacrifice fly from Marcelino Leonardo Jr. gave the Knights the lead.
Southern Virginia added three more runs in the seventh before breaking the game open in the eighth inning with a massive 12-run outburst on 11 hits.
Farris completed his historic cycle in dramatic fashion: a home run in the fourth, triple in the fifth, double and single in the eighth (along with a walk in the seventh) to cap off the milestone performance.
The Knights added a pair of runs in the ninth to secure the 25–12 win. Geertsen earned the victory on the mound, tossing seven innings, while Javari Christopher closed out the game with two innings of relief.
Game Two – Southern Virginia 20, Mary Baldwin 9
Southern Virginia carried its momentum into the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, jumping out to a 5–0 lead behind four consecutive hits from Conner Robley, Seth Lloyd, Geertsen, and Jones. Garrett Stauffer and Leonardo Jr. added to the early scoring surge.
The Knights never relinquished control, extending the lead with a sacrifice fly from Stauffer and a solo home run from Geertsen in the fourth inning.
Southern Virginia put the game away late, scoring 13 runs over the final three innings to cruise to a 20–9 victory.
Jeffrey Hill earned the win with five innings of work, while Carson Bybee added three innings in relief.
Game Three – Mary Baldwin 19, Southern Virginia 11
In the series finale, Mary Baldwin struck early, scoring 14 runs over the first four innings.
The Knights battled back throughout the game. Robert Stempin opened the scoring with a home run to center, and a combination of Squirrels errors and timely hitting brought Southern Virginia back into contention. Doubles from Geertsen and Tyler Bales helped cut the deficit to 14–9, and additional runs from a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch trimmed it to 14–11.
However, Mary Baldwin answered with five more runs to pull away and secure the 19–11 win.
Notable Performances
- Southern Virginia's offense was dominant throughout the series:
- Garrett Stauffer tallied seven hits and 11 RBIs
- Mason Jones recorded four doubles and posted a .615 on-base percentage
- Seth Lloyd added five hits and four walks
- Ryan Farris totaled four hits and five RBIs, highlighted by the historic cycle
- Zack Geertsen contributed seven hits and nine RBIs, batting .538 with a 1.000 slugging percentage
The Knights return home for an eight-game homestand, beginning Wednesday, March 25 against Regent University at 3:00 p.m.
