Late Thriller Slips Away as Southern Virginia Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, Va. — The Southern Virginia baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Eagles of University of Mary Washington, including an 11–10 walk-off loss in game one — the Knights' fourth straight one-run defeat.

Game One

Mary Washington jumped out to a 3–0 lead through two innings before Southern Virginia got on the board in the third. Conner Robley worked a two-out walk and raced all the way home on a single from Seth Lloyd to cut the deficit to 3–1.

The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom half, but the Knights responded with a two-out rally of their own in the fourth. After two hit-by-pitches and a walk loaded the bases, Brooks Burdette delivered a two-RBI single to right-center. Robley followed with an RBI single to score Ben Agnew and tie the game at 4–4, and Lloyd added another RBI single to give Southern Virginia a 5–4 advantage.

Mary Washington quickly evened the score and then used a three-run fifth inning to retake control.

The Knights continued to battle. In the sixth, Mason Jones and Agnew reached to start the inning, and another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Robley drew an RBI walk, and Lloyd added a sacrifice fly to pull Southern Virginia within one at 8–7.

Jones then blasted a solo home run to left-center in the seventh to tie the game. The Eagles countered with two runs to move back in front, but the Knights refused to go away. In the ninth, Marcelino Leonardo Jr. was hit by a pitch, and walks from Ryan Farris and Jones loaded the bases. Agnew was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Robley came through again with an RBI single to knot the score at 10–10.

Southern Virginia threatened for more but could not push across the go-ahead run. Mary Washington answered in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off to take the 11–10 victory.

Game Two

In the nightcap, the Knights were limited to three hits offensively. However, the bullpen turned in a strong performance. Carson Bybee, Agnew, Brady Steelman, Addison Stewart, and Braedyn Houck combined for seven innings of one-hit baseball in relief.

Robley capped a standout day at the plate with four total hits, three walks, and multiple RBIs across the doubleheader.

Southern Virginia concludes its nine-game road stretch and returns home to begin a four-game homestand Thursday, March 5, against Averett University at 3:00 p.m.
