Kelsey’s Hat Trick Powers Southern Virginia Women’s Soccer to Conference-Opener Win

Rocky Mount, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team earned its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating North Carolina Wesleyan 6-3 in their USA South Conference opener. The Knights' six goals marked their highest offensive output in a match since 2023.

Xoie Warner opened the scoring in the 13th minute, but the Bishops quickly responded just a minute later to level the match. Ashlee Kelsey netted her first goal of the night in the 27th minute to put the Knights back in front before N.C. Wesleyan equalized again, sending the match into halftime tied 2-2.

Despite the scoreline, the Knights dominated the first half with a 16-3 advantage in shots and a 5-0 lead in corner kicks. Only 10 first-half saves from the Bishops' goalkeeper prevented Southern Virginia from breaking the game open earlier.

The second half, however, belonged to the Knights. McKenna Currey scored her first goal of the season to reclaim the lead, followed by Kelsey's second tally in the 67th minute. The Bishops pulled one back in the 71st, but less than a minute later Kelsey completed her hat trick to restore the cushion. Delin Peterson added the final goal in the 80th minute to seal the 6-3 victory.

Southern Virginia now looks to build on this momentum when they return home to host Salem on Monday, September 23, at 5:00 p.m., where the Knights will debut their black uniforms.
