Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team dominated Tennessee Wesleyan with a 17-5 victory, marking their second straight win. The Knights showcased their offensive depth, with ten different players finding the back of the net.
Southern Virginia wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Garrett Zollinger capitalized on an out-of-bounds recovery to fire in the opening goal, giving the Knights a lead they would never relinquish. Moments later, JT Cutrer forced a turnover on a Bulldogs clear attempt and found Tyson Mauri, who buried the shot to extend the lead to 2-0 just six minutes into the game.
As time wound down in the first quarter, Ryker McMurdle added another goal, rifling a shot past the goalie off a Samuel Terreros assist to give the Knights a 3-0 lead heading into the second.
Tennessee Wesleyan got on the board first in the second quarter with a man-up goal, but Kanyun Avner quickly responded for Southern Virginia. Clay Haacke then took over, scoring back-to-back goals before Mauri completed his hat trick with two more quick goals. Zollinger added his second goal of the game before halftime, sending the Knights into the break with a commanding 9-1 lead.
The offense continued its relentless pace in the third quarter. Mauri struck again for his fourth goal, while Forest Ambridge and Peyton Merwin each tallied their first of the game. The Bulldogs attempted to cut into the deficit with two goals, but Merwin responded with his second score, closing the quarter with the Knights up 13-3.
