McConkie and Green Fuel Southern Virginia University Men’s Basketball with Double-Doubles in Home Win

Buena Vista, VA — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team earned a 95–77 victory over the Royals of Regent University, powered by double-doubles from DJ Green and Hyrum McConkie.

The Knights came out firing, racing to a 10-point lead within the first three minutes. Green and Mason Hunter knocked down early three-pointers, while Austin Mitchell and McConkie finished strong inside to set the tone.

Southern Virginia continued to apply pressure offensively as Matthew Hale drilled a pair of threes and Ashton Davis joined McConkie in controlling the paint. A highlight dunk from Mitchell gave the Knights a 10-point cushion with eight minutes remaining in the half, but Regent answered with a late surge, cutting the deficit to 46–43 at halftime.

Regent found success from beyond the arc in the opening half, but the Knights controlled the glass, owning a 9–1 advantage in offensive rebounds. Southern Virginia also took care of the ball, committing just four turnovers compared to Regent's eight.

The Knights came out of the locker room just as hot. Green buried three straight three-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half, pushing the lead back to nine. Each time the Royals threatened, Green responded from deep or Jude Ballstaedt capitalized in transition to keep the momentum with the Knights.

With the lead trimmed to five at the 10-minute mark, Southern Virginia closed the game in emphatic fashion, going on a 25–9 run over the final stretch. Green, Ballstaedt, and McConkie fueled the surge on both ends of the floor to secure the 95–77 win.

Green led all scorers with 25 points and added 11 assists for a double-double, shooting 9-of-19 from the field and 5-of-11 from three. McConkie followed with 21 points and 12 rebounds, finishing 10-of-19 from the floor.

Ballstaedt contributed 12 points, eight assists, and a team-high three steals, narrowly missing a double-double. Davis provided a major spark off the bench, scoring 16 points in 22 minutes while shooting 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, along with four rebounds and three steals.

The Knights now break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action on the road at Shenandoah University on Tuesday, December 30th at 4:00 PM. Southern Virginia defeated the Hornets at home last season, 72–70.
