STAUNTON, Va. - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team earned its 10th win of the season with a complete effort on Wednesday night, defeating conference foe Mary Baldwin on the road in straight sets.
It was all Knights from the start as they blew open the first set, building a lead as large as 14.
Two consecutive blocks from Ryann Vail and Summer Hahn eventually sealed the opening frame to give Southern Virginia a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Mary Baldwin doubled up the Knights for an early 6-3 lead, but five Southern Virginia aces the rest of the set put momentum back in the visitors favor, ultimately claiming a 2-0 set lead to put Mary Baldwin on the brink of defeat.
Looking to close things out in a hurry, Anne Downs led a furious Knights attack to 10 kills in the third. They never trailed in the set and a Mary Baldwin error closed out another victory for Southern Virginia.
It's the second straight win for Head Coach Debby Baker's squad, who was led by 13 kills from Anne Downs and 5 blocks from Ryann Vail.
Ruby Blamires collected five aces while splitting setting duties with Lucy Richins.
Looking Ahead
With the conference portion of the schedule in full swing, the Knights shift their focus to two more USA South opponents this weekend.
They'll face Brevard and North Carolina Wesleyan during a tri-match hosted by Brevard. The first match is slated for Saturday, October 4th at 12:00 PM.
