Knights Fall Short In Home Opener To Scots

BUENA VISTA, VA – The Southern Virginia University men's football team faced a tough challenge in their home opener, falling 54-6 to Maryville College.

The Scots came out swinging, putting up 35 points in the first half. Maryville's offense was led by an explosive passing game, racking up 250 yards through the air and 84 rushing yards before halftime.

The Knights adjusted defensively in the second quarter, completely shutting down the Scots' run game, holding them to -4 rushing yards on six attempts. However, Maryville's passing attack continued to be a threat, averaging 15.9 yards per completion in the second quarter, leading to several big plays.

Southern Virginia's offense gained momentum in the fourth quarter, matching Maryville's rushing yards. This culminated in an 11-play drive, capped off by Tyreeck Hall punching the ball into the end zone for the Knights' lone touchdown of the game.

Maryville finished the game with a final drive that sealed the 54-6 victory.

Quarterback Isaiah Maxey posted a QBR of 80.0, completing 15 of 28 passes for 88 yards. Tucker McCormick led the team in receptions, with four catches for 30 yards.

On the ground, Hall and Tre Kelso led the rushing attack with 42 and 26 yards on 10 carries, respectively.

Defensively, Spike Adams and Kutlur Matheson stood out, with Adams recording 13 tackles and Matheson adding 10.

The Knights will look to regroup and prepare for their next matchup as they travel to Greensboro next Saturday, the 28th.
