Staunton, Va - The Southern Virginia softball team split their series against the Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels, claiming a 3-2 victory in the first game but succumbing to a 7-15 defeat in the second.
In the opening game, Malia Davis delivered an exceptional performance, pitching a complete game to secure the win for the Knights. Despite the Knights' offensive struggles late in the game, they rallied back to secure the victory. Mary Baldwin took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but the Knights responded with RBIs from Arianna Hall, Chloe Nelson, and Dykell Jones to clinch the win. Despite being out-hit by Mary Baldwin, the Knights capitalized on drawing five walks compared to Mary Baldwin's two, ultimately securing the victory.
In the second game, the Knights kept pace with Mary Baldwin's offense, with notable offensive contributions from Arianna Hall, Chloe Nelson, and Katie Claytor, who delivered a grand slam. However, Mary Baldwin's powerful offense proved too much to handle, particularly in the sixth inning, where they scored nine runs to seal the game. Despite the Knights' efforts, Mary Baldwin's 16 hits compared to the Knights' 10 ultimately led to their defeat.
Despite the mixed results, the Knights showcased strong performances on both offense and defense, demonstrating their resilience and determination throughout the series.
