BUENA VISTA, VA - Southern Virginia University's football team triumphed over LaGrange College with a commanding 52-26 victory in a highly-anticipated week five matchup. This game marked the third all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Knights taking the lead in the series, 2-1, with the victory.
Southern Virginia's offensive prowess was on full display, led by the exceptional performance of quarterback
Lachlan Haacke. Haacke showcased his mettle by completing 16 of 21 passes for 196 yards and four touchdowns.
The ground game proved equally potent, thanks to the efforts of running backs
Keven Williams and
Alex Lanktree. Williams bulldozed his way to 102 rushing yards on 16 carries, punctuated by a crucial touchdown. Lanktree added another layer to the rushing attack with 92 yards on 14 carries, consistently gaining yards and keeping the LaGrange College defense guessing.
Defensively, middle linebacker
Colby Hyder was a force to be reckoned with. Hyder led the team with an impressive 15 total tackles, a sack, and two forced fumbles. His disruptive presence in the heart of the defense not only halted LaGrange College's offensive momentum but also provided opportunities for Southern Virginia's offense to seize control of the game.
The Knights set the tone in the opening quarter with a 2-yard touchdown pass from
Lachlan Haacke to
Isaac McMullin. LaGrange College responded with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Mann to Jaden Smith, knotting the score at 7-7.
The first half continued to see the Knights' passing game shine as Haacke connected with
Matt Johansson for a 49-yard touchdown pass. Haacke then showcased his versatility by scoring a 10-yard rushing touchdown.
LaGrange demonstrated resilience in the second quarter, with Rashod Brockington finding Dana Lucas for a 5-yard touchdown pass and later connecting with Malachi Kelley for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
The third quarter saw Southern Virginia extending their lead with a field goal from
Jarom Reed and another touchdown pass from Haacke, this time to
Jake Schenk.
The fourth quarter featured a remarkable play from LaGrange College as Deon King scored a 42-yard fumble recovery touchdown. However, Southern Virginia responded, with
Keven Williams rushing for a 15-yard touchdown and
Domo Dwyer adding a 6-yard rushing touchdown to secure the commanding 52-26 victory.
The Knights will look to carry the momentum of their victory into the coming weeks, heading to Brevard, North Carolina, for a matchup against Brevard College, scheduled for Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m.
