No. 10 Yellow Jackets Prove too much for Knights in non-conference Matchup

ASHLAND, Va. – In the final tune-up before USA South conference play begins this weekend, the Southern Virginia University Softball team visited Randolph-Macon, dropping both games after scoring just one run on the afternoon.

In her return to Ashland, Arianna Prymak was given the start at the circle in the first game—the first time playing against her old team. The sophomore couldn't have asked for a better start, forcing a groundout, a lineout, and a flyout against the first three batters faced.

The Yellow Jackets had more success in their portion of the second inning, bringing in two runs to open the scoring. They would add to the advantage in the next inning, scoring two more runs to take a 4-0 lead after three.

Randolph-Macon extended its advantage in the bottom of the fifth, with Kayla Davis scoring on an Ellie Herndon RBI.

In game number one, Southern Virginia tallied just three hits, with Yellow Jacket pitcher Gracie Ellis recording an impressive seven strikeouts.

The Knights looked to get hot with the bat in the afternoon's second game, with Dykell Jones singling to right field in the second at-bat. The Yellow Jackets quickly turned a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

It didn't take long for the home team to get on the board, with Rilee Baughan smacking the ball out of the park for a two-run homer.

Randolph-Macon stretched its lead to three in the bottom of the third after a sacrifice fly brought in Naomi Sadler. Two more runs in the following inning saw the home team take a five-run lead into the fifth.

Krailyn Guymon led off with a single up the middle in the top of the fifth for the Knights. Chloe Cochran, who came in to pinch run for Guymon, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third after a groundout by Chloe Nelson. A strikeout by pitcher Baughan got the Yellow Jackets out of a bind and kept their shutout intact.

After giving up another run in the bottom of the sixth, the Knights got on board in the top of the seventh, with Madison Lloyd reaching home plate after coming in to run for Guymon.

Southern Virginia will look to bounce back during the opening weekend of conference competition, taking on William Peace on Saturday, March 25.
