RALEIGH, NC. — Traveling back to North Carolina after a postponed matchup against William Peace, the Southern Virginia University Women's Basketball team evened their overall record to 2-2 on the year with a dominant 80-48 victory over the Pacers.
The Knights showcased a solid stat line, outshooting the Pacers 57.1%-23% from the field, and showed their strength when getting close to the hoop, scoring 44 points in the paint compared to William Peace's 14.
Southern Virginia's command was displayed with their bench, scoring a season-high 52 points with seven additional players being able to get in the scoring category.
"I am pleased with our team's growth last night," stated Head Coach, Lynnette Schroeder." Everyone was able to contribute and make a positive impact and we are working hard while learning every day."
For the second consecutive game, senior
Courtney Olson led the team in scoring, recording a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Olson now sits atop the team in overall scoring with 45 on the young season, averaging 11.3 points per game, and 5.8 rebounds per game.
"Last night, our quote before the game was 'share the sugar' and that's exactly what we did," exclaimed
Courtney Olson. "We had the most assists out of any game we've played this year and did a great job working as a team and pushing the floor in transition. We're finally starting to click and get that team chemistry by playing together and getting everyone involved, which is what Southern Virginia basketball is all about. I'm so proud of how much we've improved just in the last two weeks. We work so hard in practice and have a long way to go, but the potential of this team has me so excited for the rest of this season!"
Along with Olson, newcomers Presley Heggie and Eve Schmalbeck shined for the Knights, all tying the top scoring position with 11 points each. The duo stayed consistent throughout the game, only missing four combined shots on the night, and combining for eight rebounds.
It did not take long for Southern Virginia to establish their dominance, going ahead seven points, 11-4, off an
Alyssa McKrola bucket towards the end of the first. The lead would be extended to 14 at the end of the first quarter, 20-6, thanks to a nine-point run capped off by a pair of Schmalbeck and Heggie layups.
The Knights carried their efforts into the second half, extending their lead to 18 points, 24-6, over two minutes into the second quarter. The Pacers managed to stop the bleeding with five unanswered points, but Southern Virginia punched back, grabbing their largest lead of the game at 23 points, 40-17, right before the half.
Southern Virginia did not slow down the remainder of the game, answering every play that William Peace made. The Knights shot 63.19% percent in the second half, led by six Schmalbeck and Abbigail Snyder points to take home the 80-48 victory.
The Knights will rest up the remainder of the week to enjoy a brief holiday break, while preparing for their next opponent on Tuesday, November 29, taking on league foe, Salem College. Opening tip off is scheduled for 6 pm.
