Knights Football Week Eight Preview: Southern Virginia vs. Belhaven

JACKSON, MS. — Southern Virginia hits the road, traveling to Jackson, Mississippi, to take on second-ranked Belhaven University for week eight of the 2022 season.

"It should be an exciting atmosphere to play in" exclaimed Coach Ed. "They're a very disciplined team and we're anxious to see how the team steps up to the challenge."

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS:

  • Belhaven enters week eight coming off three consecutive victories with the most recent being a dominant 59-7 victory over Greensboro.
  • The Blazers are glued by Tim Johnson leading the offense, recording 1048 total yards while throwing 15 touchdowns.
  • Johnson will be supported by Kolbe Blunt, who averages just under 100 rushing yards per game along with ten touchdowns.
  • Defensively, Corey Toliver leads the team with 36 tackles (31 solo, 5 assisted), and will have his eyes set on stopping the Knights' run game.

THE SERIES:

The two teams meet for the first time in program history with Belhaven entering the week as the No. 2 seed with a 5-1 overall record.

IMPACT PLAYERS:
Cade Nelson and Jireek Washington will need to continue  their offense output to make big plays and keep the mometum in favor of the Knights. Nelson is leading the run game, averaging 5.9 yards per carry while Washington has 23 receptions through the air.

Coming off his second Defensive Rookie of the Week, Maikeli Tuinakauvadra needs to lead the defense to minimize Toliver's running efforts. Tuinakauvadra anchors the line, recording six tackles (four for loss), and three sacks in the team's matchup against Maryville last week.
