No. 8 Knights Take Down Saints in Semifinals, Advance to CVC Championship

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team continued its unprecedented success on Friday afternoon, defeating Marymount University 3-2 in the CVC Tournament Semifinals at Rockbridge County High School.

Despite playing in front of a raucous crowd, the Saints (14-15, 7-4 CVC) took the first set handily by a score of 25-19. The Knights (22-3, 11-0 CVC) managed only a .200 kill percentage in the set, while the Saints could seemingly do no wrong on their way to hitting .435. The Knights also struggled to get their serves in play with seen service errors in the set.

Southern Virginia turned the tables in the second set, winning 25-22. While Marymount kept up its form from the previous frame, the Knights' offense was just too much as they put down 17 kills on 27 total attacks. Sophomore Nahuel Recabarren finished the set with an impressive nine kills, while Paul Clark picked up five.

Service errors continued to plague the Knights in the third stanza, as five of their serves were unable to find the court in the 25-20 defeat. The frame was back-and-forth until the Saints scored four unanswered points late to take a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, the Knights scored five out of six points to take a 14-10 lead, but Marymount responded with a run of its own to tie the game up at 14 apiece. Southern Virginia played clean volleyball the rest of the set to win 25-20, sending the elimination game into a fifth set.

After hitting well all game long, the Saints finally cooled off in the final set due to several attack errors and some excellent blocking from the Knights. Southern Virginia wasted no time claiming the victory, beating the Saints 15-8 to claim a spot in the CVC Tournament Championship.

Recabarren was the man of the match as he ended with an astounding 27 kills, a career-high for the All-CVC First Teamer. Clark made his presence felt as well with 14 kills and nine digs.

Kaipo Tagaloa dished out 49 assists in the game to go along with nine digs, and Colby Wilson led the team with six total blocks.

Southern Virginia will play for the CVC Tournament Championship against Juniata College, who swept No. 6 Kean in its semifinal matchup. The game will start at 4:00 p.m. at Rockbridge County High School in Lexington, Virginia, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
